Someone’s response to the prose features that are on here equated it to the radio, saying that some songs are “just so good” that they have to be there. Whose opinion of “good” are we talking about again? Because I remember hating more than half of the songs featured on the “Top 10” in the ’90s every week. Please, no more Sixpence None the Richer! The point is, just because it gets featured, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be all polished and shiny for everyone to adore. Some will like it and some won’t. That’s kind of the foundation of creating anything.

My point is, the entire process is quite subjective. All of the editors come from different walks of life and are going to like different things. One piece is going to hit home with someone, while it will register next to nothing for someone else. I will see plenty of well-written pieces that are wrought with grammatical mistakes and errors; I’m sure the message behind it is great, but how hard is that to read?

Another point is that the tagged/prose/everything is enormous. E. Frigging. Normous. There will be daily journal entries, pictures of sports cars, pictures of blowjobs, and things that should clearly be just poetry. On top of those, there will be at least 30 prose pieces on love. Don’t get me wrong here, love is great, but when you have to read the same lines about tears burning your cheeks and how your heart is like chalk, your brain makes that awful, disgusting sound of a deflating balloon inside your head. But I still tread my way through the list.

Repeat ad nauseam every day for the week. And then the next. And the one after that. No, really. Go try it and see what you come up with.

But, when you see a post from someone you know who puts out great work, that sprinkles chilli pepper on your brain to make it itch and feel something, it’s hard not to be glad for the breath of fresh air and remember why you’re doing this.

I try very hard not to always tag those I see on both my dash and all the prose pieces, but when you’re following such a high number of people, it’s inevitable you’re going to tag some of their work. That’s just how probability works. I’ve seen some people that I’ve featured once or twice, when they were just starting out, and are now on the Top Contributor list. That kind of thing makes my heart try to eat itself in joy. That’s the kind of thing I’d like to see happening more often, and that’s what I aim for.

A lot of things people forget is that the writing community is also about being proactive. There are places like Burning Muse where you can submit pieces by other people that you think deserve attention. You can reblog other people’s work that you enjoy. Getting tagged by an editor isn’t the only way to garnish attention around here.

But as long as we’re trying to “spread the blame” here, the prose feature is not a prize simply because you were able to string words together into a paragraph. Possibly, your work isn’t even that great. I know, because mine isn’t and has been featured a handful of times. But if you know it’s not great, and still have the audacity to complain about who’s featured, you’re here for the wrong thing. I don’t write to get tags; I write because it’s enjoyable to create; I write because I want to clear my brain of the stories that are plaguing it so that they can leave me alone. You’re not entitled to a prose feature just because you write. You want to strive toward that shiny little blue tag, impress us.

The onus is on you to give us great things to read. We want to find the “unknowns” and give them the attention they deserve, because that can only make the community grow.
